Bullseye Glass Action Alert, Feb 4, 2016

Cadmium 49 times over the limit, Arsenic 159 times over the limit

Contact DEQ and Bullseye regarding carcinogenic and neurotoxic emissions

Wednesday, The Portland Mercury reported that Bullseye Glass, located at 3722 SE 21st St, has been emitting "a monthly average of 49 times the state air-safety benchmark level for the neurotoxin and carcinogen cadmium, and 159 times the air-safety goal for the carcinogen arsenic."

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) plan to announce specifics of their collected data on Bullseye's toxic emissions recorded at nearby measuring stations. Also nearby are schools and a children's daycare located at Fred Meyer's headquarters, KinderCare Education LLC.

The news was a shock to Portland Clean Air, as it was to local residents who expressed their concern on social media. Even more alarming is the fact that Bullseye's emissions permit with the DEQ is currently expired and does not even list cadmium or arsenic among its major pollutants. Cadmium isn't even mentioned. Additionally, DEQ has no authority to halt emissions in the event a polluter's emissions demonstrably exceed the state's own safe limits.

As The Portland Mercury noted, there's no way to know how much neurotoxic and carcinogenic pollutants Bullseye has emitted over their 42 years in business.

These facts of a great concern to Portland Clean Air, our supporting members, and the community. We advise the community to take action by contacting Bullseye and the Oregon DEQ directly to report any nuisance odors or emission plumes exceeding 20% opacity you observe coming from their SE Portland factory. Contact information for each is below.
